Actinic Keratoses

Description & Symptoms

Actinic keratoses (AKs) are dry, scaly patches that form on the skin after years of sun exposure. AK lesions can take a variety of appearances, but they are usually scaly (feeling like sandpaper) and range in color from skin-toned to reddish-brown. The lesions may be as small as the head of a pin or as large as a quarter (or bigger, if left untreated).

Treatment

There are several options available for the treatment of AKs, varying depending on patient age, number and size of the lesions, success of past treatments, and personal preference. Options include: cyrosurgery (freezing of the lesions), shave removal, cutterage (scraping), laser surgery, chemical peels, and photodynamic therapy (PDT). There are also several mediactions available for the treatment of AKs, and treatment regimens may vary depending on the kind of medication prescribed.
